Skills for the Future

This project has been funded with support from the European Commission

Which are the methods/instruments that are used by companies in the exchange of information and in communication with the academic world?

The workshops' participants have identified the following ideas (causes/effects) related to this theme:

  • Both parts have local groups for exchanging information in small conferences and conventions.
  • If any fund can be created, some projects (mostly Erasmus Multilateral projects and national projects) are also arranged to share ideas and contribute to cooperation.
  • Some of the companies still have gaps in the interaction with universities. The sectorial and business associations should have a more active role with the approach to the universities and also make known and encourage the companies to a stronger collaboration with the research departments of universities.
  • Internships, projects, real results
  • Information about science work and capabilities
  • Seminars and workshops
  • Joint research efforts
  • Perhaps the ideal would be to create intermediate structures, where both parties could "strip” of their own prejudices. In this respect, the training institutions (similar to R & D centers of companies) may have an important role as they can provide space for dialogue and meeting between both parties. This is because the training, by its nature, has a purely practical application of knowledge. The advantage that the training institutions may have about business R & D centers is their transverse and flexibility, as they are not restricted to specific and defined objectives, nor allocated to the special interest of an individual company or industry. From this perspective, professional training institutions could create the enabling environment for dialogue between science and business, as it could low the science expectations for a pragmatic field, and raise business expectations for innovation, evolution and development of products
  • More and better forms of communication may encourage the emergence of new business;
    More and better ways of communicating can lower the costs associated with travel and face meetings that may no longer make sense;
    Creating cooperation networks for the development of new business.
  • Approach and establish inter-personal relations
    Displacement of the science to the business
  • Cooperation platform needed!!! There is no contact between science and business (platforms or organizations are required to facilitate contacts and presentations of offers and expectations).
  • Linkage with career offices enterprises-universities;
  • Organisation of seminars;
  • Organisation of joint Masters;
  • Organisation of particular events for the promotion of their products in which they invite also academics, which are involved in some way in that particular sector.

Common aspects: the organisation of seminars and workshops in addition to career services offered by universities seem to be the more common methods of contact of businesses with universities. In some cases also the organisation of joint masters and the interaction of entrepreneurs in academic courses may represent a method to inform academics about business needs. It would be useful to have common  platforms or organizations to facilitate contacts and presentations of offers and expectations.
