Skills for the Future

This project has been funded with support from the European Commission

What could scientists do better to facilitate their cooperation with business?

The workshops' participants have identified the following ideas (causes/effects) related to this theme:

  • Scientists should give much importance to the dialogue with businesspeople by arranging business supporting projects.
  • Scientists can also arrange many more conventions to share business people’s necessities.
  • Scientists should give much more importance to the practical education of candidates and try to contact with businesspeople for increasing the interns’ quotas in internship education.
  • It should exist a greater openness and willingness of the researchers to an effective approach to the business world.
  • The research undertaken by the research departments of universities should have market logic, that is, seek to develop solutions that have practical application and which can be industrialized, because only then the companies will begin to appreciate and understand the importance of the knowledge produced by researchers.
  • Adapt their studies to the reality and extent of the sectors under study
  • Be integrated on business
  • A simplistic answer might begin like this: dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. It should be considered the performance of spaces for debate and benchmarking, such as seminars and workshops, essentially. From them, should be established runways capable of launching platforms of understanding and convergence in the approach to targets. It is true that it seems very simple, but we all know that is not so.
  • Actively seek to understand what are the needs of businesses
  •  make their research accessible in more palatable/ easily understood forms
  • Opening minds, breaking down elitist barriers elitist, pragmatism
  • Sharing knowledge
  • The education system should, through its study plans instil entrepreneurial spirit, developing in the students/trainees strengthening entrepreneurial skills, through practice characteristics of leadership, creativity and innovation, thus facilitating not only the entry in the labour market but also encouraging the creation of new opportunities.
  • Being closer to the business reality and adapt the technical content to practical application in real or simulated context
  • The research work should be directed to businesses, be more practical and less theoretical, that can be applicable, targeted to micro-economics.
  • Students thesis can support business operations: Entrepreneurs should be able to influence subjects of e.g. theses.
  • It is necessary to create a cooperative relationship based on the philosophy of business incubator, in which academics and entrepreneurs provide their own skills and experiences remaining independent.
  • The long term research must be protected and reinforced also thanks to private funding but Academic world has also to provide businesses with more practical solutions and technologies useful to give and answer to current problems of enterprises, making them more competitive.
  • The pedagogical offer of universities must include strategic  courses for students to be more competitive on the labour market, above all for that ones involved in scientific field, who risk to finish their studies without the instruments to be really competitive.

Common aspects. Participants to national focus groups have used some specific words: dialogue, greater openness, cooperative relationships. Moreover it has been underlined the importance of the practical application of knowledge and the use of a more easy and comprehensible communication code in order to make research accessible to business and close to reality. Moreover entrepreneurs should choose the subject of students thesis in order to have a final result useful for enterprises.
